I heart Walgreens

Every month in their circular they have "free" items that you can buy. You then mail in a rebate form and Walgreens will send you a gift card with that amount plus 10% of your rebate amount. Last month I snagged some Pantene shampoo and conditioner and makeup. Come on, who doesn't like free stuff and free money!?!?

Sure, free is good. But free without having to jump through hoops is GREAT. I hate mail-in rebates and customer loyalty cards. If they really wanted to give it to me for free, they'd just hand it over.

I read about a guy who took out customer loyalty cards under an assumed name and address, then started circulating the bar codes for others to stick on their own cards. They use them to track your spending for targeted marketing, so this guy's profile has to have the most off-the-Bell-curve spending pattern on the planet...

Who hands over money for free? And, track my spending all you want, that really doesn't bother me.

It's not free cash I'm talking about, it's free products. Companies give away freebies all the time to grow the brand. Unless they're too poor or cheap.

Spending-tracking may not bother you now, but when you get those creepy targeted advertisements, it'll feel more like Big Brother every day. Data mining is some scary stuff, and the companies that do it are just now learning how powerful it is - and how valuable it is to other companies, and how much they can get for selling such data, and they don't even need to ask your permission, because you gave it to them when you signed up for the loyalty card or the rebate...

...or maybe I'm just being paranoid. But sometimes, the question isn't "Am I paranoid?", but "Am I paranoid enough?"
